Mr. Austin was instrumental in starting and developing African-American Drum and Bugle Corps in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and Harlem, New York. This was through PAL Recreation Centers and Churches.

 

Drum and Bugle Corps Standstill Competitions:  Wynn Center PAL "Silver Buckles" 2 years undefeated. In preparation for field drill marching and maneuvering competitions. The second year came in second losing by 0.01 points. The third year winning the New York State Championship1959. 

 

Mr. Austin's musical innovations using the tuning slide to get sharps and flats which helped with Jazz and Classical music expanding the repertoire. The physical training was United States Army Basic Training. When I was Drafted I trained my Platoon attaining "Best Platoon" and I was awarded "Best Soldier Trophy". 

 

Mr. Austin's interest in Martial Arts lead to PAL Boxing coach, then Kung Fu, Tai Chi for which he became world known.

 

His interest and love for Drum Corps lead to his collecting and accumulating enough musical instruments to outfit 3 starter Corps. He donated the Instuments to the Wynn Center Toppers Alumni ,to distribute to corps in New York and New Jersey.
